Martinsville boys, Patrick County girls wait another day

After weather wreaked havoc on the end of conference tournament play last week, it has again affected the VHSL’s state basketball tournament this week.

Martinsville and Patrick County were slated to have games Thursday night. Both teams have pushed those games to Friday night due to weather.

Martinsville’s boys team plays Friday at 6 p.m. at Magna Vista High School against Dan River for the Region 2A West title.

At Hidden Valley High School in Roanoke, Patrick County’s girls team will face Broadway at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in a Region 3A West semifinal.

Travis Crouch of Everything Outdoors wasn’t aware that there was a booth competition until the day before his booth won best in show at Fast Track 2015.

“It’s just an added bonus,” Crouch said. “Once we started setting it up and I saw the way it looked, I knew we had a pretty good shot.”

Mother sentenced in child's death

A Martinsville woman was sentenced to serve five years in prison as a result of charges stemming from the death of her daughter, according to Martinsville Commonwealth’s Attorney Clay Gravely.

Dominique Lanier Martin, 22, of 765 Indian Trail, Martinsville, pleaded guilty Friday to charges of felony involuntary manslaughter (reduced from felony murder) and felony child neglect, he said.

Winter weather expected

Temperatures soared into the 70s in the Martinsville area on Wednesday, but — believe it or not — a winter advisory is in effect for the region until 10 tonight.

The winter weather advisory applies to Henry and Patrick counties and Martinsville. The National Weather Service is forecasting about an inch-and-a-half of snow — although it says up to two inches is possible — in addition to sleet and daytime temperatures today only in the 30s.
