The Martinsville School Board approved applying for a waiver for third-graders reading below grade level at Albert Harris Elementary School to be exempt from state science and/or social studies testing requirements.

Magna Vista softball coach Brian Brinegar has had the good fortune of coaching some talented players in his nine-year career at MVHS. However, none of his players have ever signed on to play college ball.

Until Monday.

And he couldn’t have asked for a better player than Hannah Savedge to be his first.

The senior captain of the Warriors this spring signed a letter of intent to play at NAIA Division I Virginia Intermont College in Bristol. Savedge was one of five Piedmont District players this season to make the All-Region IV first team, while also notching a PD first team selection at catcher.

In mid-May, Lonnie James Kilby (L.J. for short) made his way back to where it all began 64 years ago.

And more importantly, a trip to see who it all began with.

Kilby, an assistant basketball coach at Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, Tenn., returned to visit his mother, Gayne Kilby, in Patrick Springs. She is everything to Kilby, and nearly every aspect of his life can be traced back to her.

Kilby’s 64 years have been filled with plenty of heartache and joy. A former Bassett and Ferrum basketball player and lifelong coach, he’s seen some peaks. Kilby is also no stranger to the valley.
