Don't expect work to be done

Referencing to a recent article on Oct. 28 from the front page of the Martinsville Bulletin, there was unfortunately a fatality on one of our local roads in the Horsepasture area on U.S. 58. On a separate related article, it stated that VDOT is now going to do a safety study for that general part of the four-lane roadway to prevent future problems or incidents such as what recently happened.

I awoke some time after 11 p.m. — not knowing where I was until the the TV stared back at me and announced that the New York Yankees just won Game Four of the World Series.

Back to sleep. Up again at 4 a.m. and there it was in the “Bulletin” with a color photo of New York Yankees Johnny Damon “singling” and the caption headline “Yankees beat Phillies 7-4” on the front page of the “Sports Section.”

Female detectives needed

There need to be female detectives in Martinsville and Henry County. Even if there may have been some in the past, there needs to be some now if there isn’t.

There should be black and white female detectives up here, it would be very, very good.

She gets 35 years in prison in uncle's stabbing

Pending an appeal, Teresa Thomas will spend the next 35 years in jail for the stabbing death of her uncle.

Thomas, 48, was found guilty in August of second-degree murder in the Nov. 2, 2006, stabbing death of her uncle, Herbert Hoover “Cat” Thomas, 77.

At her sentencing on Wednesday, Henry County Circuit Court Judge David V. Williams denied a motion by defense attorney Perry Harrold to set aside the jury’s verdict due to insufficient evidence.

Bob McDonnell’s “clear vision,” along with voter discontent with Democrats in Washington, propelled Republicans to the state’s top offices Tuesday, a local official said.

“I think the key was Bob McDonnell had a clear vision of what he wanted to do for Virginia, and he was consistent, and he had a solid conservative message that the people of Virginia, all over Virginia, reacted to,” said Tucker Watkins, 5th District Republican Party chairman.

Someone voted for Martinsville Mayor Kathy Lawson for city sheriff in Tuesday’s election, and she was not running for the post.

Del. Ward Armstrong, who was re-elected to his 10th District seat, received a vote for the 16th District House seat. So did Martinsville City Councilmen Kimble Reynolds Jr., Danny Turner and former mayor Mark Crabtree.

Ruth Easley, who was elected to a third term as Martinsville’s commissioner of the revenue, received a vote for city treasurer.

November 5, 2009 BREAKING NEWS: H1N1 vaccine clinic Monday - News
The Virginia Department of Health will host an H1N1 vaccine clinic at the National Guard Armory, 315 Commonwealth Boulevard West in Martinsville, on Monday, Nov. 9.

The clinic will operate in three shifts; from 9 a.m. to noon, 1 to 4 p.m., and 5 to 8 p.m. Each time slot will have vaccine available.
