Editorial: New facility true to race heritage
Sunday, April 27, 2008
A new motorsports building on the campus of Patrick Henry Community College reinforces the importance of the motorsports program to the college and the community.
The $8.715 million building was included in a nearly $1.5 billion bond package approved by the General Assembly on Wednesday. Gov. Tim Kaine has 30 days to sign the measure, and then planning for the building will begin.
The 40,000-square-foot building will bring the college’s motorsports program onto its campus. Currently, it is housed at Arrington Manufacturing at the Patriot Centre industrial park and while that facility was a godsend to the fledgling program, the new building will allow the program’s 50-60 students to study with their peers.
It also will be a sign to the community and beyond of state recognition that motorsports are important to this area and that PHCC can offer training in the field. That field is growing, and it is fitting that growth occur here.
Many people associate the name Martinsville with auto racing. This building will take that to the next level.
