The baseball team at Patrick Henry Community College has added two local faces to its roster for the coming season.
Current Bassett seniors Jeff Alderman and Jeremy Moore have signed to play for Patriots.
“It means everything (to me) because baseball has been my whole life, basically,” said the 17-year-old Alderman, a pitcher, of the chance to continue playing the sport he loves. “I feel very fortunate because most people don’t get this far.”
Moore, a first baseman and pitcher, had similar sentiments.
“I’m very excited,” he said. “I know they’ve got a good program, good coaching, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”
Moore, the son of Pleasant Grove residents Tim and Michelle Moore, currently has a 1.28 ERA and a 4-1 record for BHS. He started playing baseball as soon as he could pick up a bat, he said.
Moore’s parents were happy with their son’s destination.
“We’re just glad he’s staying close to home,” said Tim Moore. “I’m real excited all of his hard work has paid off.”
Alderman, the son of Bassett residents David and Margaret Alderman, has been dealing with a shoulder injury this season, which has limited him to just two starts for Bassett.
“It took a lot of hard work and a lot of commitment,” said David Alderman of his son. “He’s been playing travel ball since he was 8 years old.”
Paul Menschner, the Patriots’ assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, had both players on his Post 42 American Legion team last summer and plans to do so again this season.
Menschner said Moore’s hitting ability will be an asset for PHCC.
“I think he’s got a lot of pop in his bat, a lot of power,” he said, noting that Moore does well under pressure. “I think he wants to be up there with guys on second and third.”
While Bassett head coach Bill Parks acknowledged Moore’s offensive skills, he said the first baseman also shines in the field.
“Defensively, I have not seen a better first baseman since I have been coaching baseball,” said Parks, who’s been in the profession for more than a dozen years. “I’m happy for him, that he’s getting an opportunity to play at the next level. I think he’ll be a good fit at Patrick Henry. I think both will be happy with the situation.”
The recruiting coordinator also was excited to get Alderman.
“Jeff’s got a real good arm,” he said, noting that Alderman has excellent control. “I had him last summer, and he did a great job for us. I think he’s going to do great, and we’re happy to have him next year.”
Parks was proud of Alderman’s attitude this season.
