Goode expects to vote for McCain
Sunday, July 6, 2008
Fifth District U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode said if the presidential race pits Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama, he will vote for McCain.
"I haven't made an endorsement yet," he said Friday while attending a Martinsville Mustangs game.
But if McCain, a Republican, and Obama, a Democrat, are nominated by their parties at conventions this summer, Goode said he will vote for McCain in the November election.
Goode, a Republican from Rocky Mount whose district includes Henry County and Martinsville, also is running in the Nov. 4 election. He is seeking his seventh term in Congress and is being opposed by Ivy attorney Tom Perriello.
According to a release from Perriello's campaign, Congressional Quarterly, the Cook Political Report and Larry Sabato's Crystal Ball all have moved the 5th District race outlook from "safe Republican" to "likely Republican."
Also, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has listed it as an "Emerging Race" this year, the release stated.
Goode responded Friday that he takes every campaign seriously, and the 2006 campaign against Democrat Al Weed was "very hard." This year, he said he expects "huge turnout." That traditionally is true for presidential elections.
He has been busy campaigning, Goode said, adding that he spent Friday in the "ville's" - Scottsville, Earlysville, Stanardsville and Martinsville.
