By BULLETIN STAFF REPORTS -
A Danville man was killed in an industrial accident Friday morning at the former Tultex Corp. complex in Martinsville.
Carl Wayne Turner, 54, of Sugartree Church Road in Danville, was attempting to remove a large air conditioning unit from the roof of a building used for warehousing when the load shifted and the unit pressed against him, according to city spokesman Scott Coleman.
Turner was pinned between the air conditioner and an exterior wall and suffered “massive trauma to the head and upper chest,” according to a news release from the city.
He died at the scene, Coleman said.
Martinsville Fire and EMS responded to the scene, as did the Martinsville Police Department. A crane truck was used to remove the victim’s body, according to the release.
Kenneth Draper, Martinsville Fire Chief, assisted with the initial investigation and said Turner’s body was transported to the state medical examiner’s office in Roanoke for an autopsy.
Turner was working for a private subcontractor based in the Danville area, and he was working with at least one other person when the accident occurred, Coleman said.
Officials have not determined what caused the incident, the release said. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.
The accident happened around 10:30 a.m. Friday at 101 E. Commonwealth Blvd. The warehouse is behind the Commonwealth Center, which once housed Tultex.
Stone Ambulance also responded.
The Martinsville Police Department will assist OSHA and the state medical examiner’s office in the investigation. |
