For the third time in this presidential campaign, Henry County and Martinsville have been privileged to host the national campaigns. We hope the attention will translate into assistance for the area.
On Friday, Democratic vice presidential candidate Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware held a rally at Patrick Henry Community College. In August, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois held a town hall-style meeting at PHCC’s motorsports facility.
Their attention stems from this area’s plight of job losses and high unemployment, especially resulting from trade policies. Both Sens. Obama and Biden addressed those concerns and others while here. They have seen how national issues can impact a community, and hopefully they remembered that after they left.
Last Sunday, Todd Palin, husband of Republican vice presidential candidate Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, also visited the area. He, like the others, brought the national spotlight on Henry County. We hope presidential candidate Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Gov. Palin will visit here as well before the Nov. 4 election.
National exposure and awareness of this region’s problems are the values of these visits, whether they are by Democrats or Republicans, candidates or their spouses. We hope the area’s concerns have resonated with both campaigns and they will keep them in mind as they lead — in whatever capacity — in the future. |
