By GINNY WRAY - Bulletin Staff Writer
Democrat Mark Warner holds a nearly 30 percentage point lead over Republican Jim Gilmore in the race for one of Virginia's U.S. Senate seats, according to a poll prepared for the Martinsville Bulletin.
Warner leads Gilmore 61 to 32 percent in the Mason-Dixon Virginia Poll conducted Oct. 29-30.
The poll of 625 registered voters statewide found 1 percent favored other candidates and 6 percent were undecided.
Warner's lead over Gilmore has widened since another Mason-Dixon poll conducted in mid-October. Then, the margin was 58 to 33 percent, with 9 percent undecided.
Warner leads in all areas of Virginia and among all groups except Republicans, the poll stated. In the Lynchburg/Southside are, which includes Henry County and Martinsville, the spread is 63-33 percent.
Warner's name recognition is 29 points higher than Gilmore's, whose unfavorable name recognition (37 percent) is higher than his favorable recognition (34 percent).
Warner and Gilmore both are former governors. They are running in Tuesday's election for the Senate seat being given up by Republican Sen. John Warner. The Warners are not related.
The poll, conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc., had a 4 percentage point margin of error.
