Bassett’s RaShawn “Boo” Woods will call Lenoir-Rhyne College home next year after signing recently to play football for the Division-II school.

Woods, a four-year starter for the Bengals, will be given a scholarship to attend Lenoir-Rhyne that accounts for approximately 80 percent of his tuition based on both his academic and athletic merits.

“I’m very proud of him,” said Woods’ mother, Cindy Woods. “I’m glad he was able to get one, and I’m also glad the process is over with because it’s been very hard traveling up and down the road. He seemed happy there, and it was a good fit for him. I’m very proud of him.”

As the Bengals’ starting quarterback for more than three seasons, Woods is familiar with the triple-option attack LRC employs. He said that was one reason he chose Lenoir-Rhyne, along with the fact that he could get playing time at QB after red-shirting his freshman season.

Bassett football coach Jay Gilbert was also pleased with Woods’ choice.

“I’m happy for him because they run the triple-option. Boo’s been running that for four years, so he’s gonna go in with an advantage over some,” said Gilbert. “I’m happy in that respect, and I’m hoping he’ll get me a copy of their playbook so that I can get some ideas from it too. So, it’s gonna work out double time, I hope.”

During his four-year tenure as quarterback for the Bengals, Woods has received a wealth of honors.

Most recently, Woods was named to the Second Team All-Region squad as quarterback. He also received First Team All-District nods this year on both sides of the ball. During the 2007 season, Woods was named the Piedmont District Offensive Player of the Year.

There’s no question the 5-foot-10, 200 pound senior knows his way around a football field.

Since his sophomore year, Woods totaled 551 carries for 3,415 yards and 33 touchdowns. He passed for 3,546 yards on 491 attempts, completing 193 for 39 touchdowns.

On the defensive side, Woods recorded 91 tackles, 75 assists, two interceptions and four sacks.

According to Woods, it wasn’t all about athletics when it came time for his decision.

“They have a physical therapy program, occupational therapy. I’m interested in helping people, so that caught my attention too,” said Woods. “It had a really homey feel to it. I didn’t feel out of place or anything like that, so that helped out a lot too.”

Woods’ father Darin Woods shared a similar sentiment.

“We looked at a lot of schools,” he said, “and that seemed to be the one he latched onto with what he wanted to do plus academically and athletically. I’m pretty pleased with it, and I think he’ll fit in and do pretty good there.”
