Bassett’s baseball team earned a resounding win over William Fleming on Tuesday afternoon, embarrassing the Colonels on their own turf, 15-0.

The game was a combined no hitter. Ryan Boyd started, pitching 2 innings and striking out five. Roy Morgan then pitched two innings, tacking on another five strikeouts. Travis Hancock finished the victory in the fifth inning with one strikeout.

Offensively, the Bengals recorded 10 singles. Patrick Martin had two hits, two RBI and three runs scored. Grant Wickline also had two hits and two RBI.

Bassett (3-1) will host Halifax Co. on Friday.

Carlisle 8

Roanoke Catholic 1

Carlisle’s baseball team won their first game of the season, routing Roanoke Catholic 8-1.

Cameron Martin took the win for the Chiefs, pitching six innings. He had 11 strikeouts and two walks and gave up only one hit, a homer to Josh Greer.

Trey Gaylor had three runs scored, a double and three RBI for Carlisle. Mitchell Turner went 1-for-3 with his own double and 2 RBi. Jake Joyce went 2-3, hitting a pair of doubles and bringing in one run. Rashawn Hairston finished 1-for-2 and had 2 runs scored.

Carlisle returns to action Friday for a home game against Miller School.

BOYS SOCCER

Bassett 6

Chatham 1

Bassett’s boys soccer team topped Chatham Tuesday afternoon, 6-1.

Tyler Martin scored his goal at the 35th minute with an assist by Ethan Atwood. He scored again in the 43rd minute, this time assisted by Jake Sharpe. Matt Chitwood also scored on an assist from Sharpe. Lucas Prillaman, Jamie Turner and Marvin Foyka each scored one goal.

Chatham’s lone socre came from a penalty kick in the 38th minute.

Bill Ison recorded four saves for the Bengals, who improved to 2-1.

Chatham will get another shot at BHS when they host the Bengals Tuesday at 5:30.

GIRLS SOCCER

Carlisle 3

Roanoke Catholic 3

Carlisle’s girls soccer team’s first Blue Ridge Conference game ended in a 3-all tie with Roanoke Catholic School.

The teams traded goals. Roanoke drew first blood, then Carlisle’s Taylor Slick scored on an Allison Miller assist. Sallie Rives Seiy scored in the second half to put Carlisle ahead, but Roanoke responded to tie once more.

Roanoke took the lead on a penalty kick, but Meredith Young kept Carlisle alive with a goal in stoppage time. Seiy assisted the kick. However, neither team could find the net in overtime.

The Chiefs beat Dan River on Monday in a shutout, 5-0, to make their record 1-0-1.

Carlisle returns to the field Saturday to face Eastern Mennonite, who is favored to win the BRC this year.

Patrick Co. 2

Dan River 0

The Lady Cougars recorded their second win of the season Tuesday night, defeating Dan River 2-0.

Tori Washburn and Sarah Puckett each scored a goal, and Katie Kipreos had one assist. Chelsea Hardy worked the net for Patrick County, recording eight saves.

The girls improve to 2-0 on their season.

SOFTBALL

Martinsville’s softball dropped a doubleheader against Westover Christian on Tuesday afternoon, 4-3 in the first game and 1-4 in the second.

Courtney Blankenship pitched both games and took the losses as MHS still searches for its first win of the season. She had three strikeouts, four walks and two hits allowed in game 1. In game 2, she allowed seven hits.

Jessica Pannell went 2-for-2 in game 1 and had an RBI. Mary Grace Hankins had a run and Brooke Hairston had two runs.

In game 2, Ariel Bouldin went 1-for-3, Blankenship 1-for-2 and Kaitlyn Harris 1-for-3. Pannell had an RBI, and Harris scored the run.

BOYS TENNIS

The Patrick County boys tennis team shut out the FloydCounty Buffaloes Tuesday afternoon, 9-0.

Derrick Agee, Lucas Terry, Jordan Easter, Tyler Scales, Drew Cockram and Trevor Wilkinson all won their singles matches by sizeable margins. In doubles, Agee and Terry, Cockram and Austin Cole, and Brad Shelton and Wilkinson came out on top to sweep Floyd.

The Cougars are now 2-1 on the season and will host host Franklin County at 4:30 pm. today.
