James Turner and Ronwyn Pritchett were recently honored by the Virginia High School Coaches Association.
Both earned all-state honorable mentions for boys basketball, Group AA.
Turner is a senior at Bassett, and Pritchett is finishing his final year at Martinsville.
Baseball

Westover Christian 1
Martinsville’s baseball team won its second consecutive game Tuesday night, toppling Westover Christian 7-1 at MHS.
Earning the win were pitchers Dechane Hairston and Matthew Turner. Hairston pitched three innings, striking out three and giving up one hit and one run. Turner pitched four innings with no runs, a single hit and six strikeouts for the save.
The Bulldogs scored three runs in the third to take the lead, 3-1. They put the game away in the fourth inning with another four runs. Alan Nunn smacked a triple with bases loaded.
Martinsville was led by Chris Scott, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Nunn also went 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, in addition to his fourth inning triple.
Carl Edholm and Turner also went 2-for-3 and had two runs scored each. Turner tacked on one RBI as well.
The Bulldogs look to extend their hot streak tonight at 5 at Carlisle.

Roanoke Catholic 5
Carlisle’s baseball team defeated Roanoke Catholic School Tuesday night, 11-5.
Earning the win was Trey Gaylor, who pitched four innings. He gave up five runs (one earned) and two hits, and he walked two and struck out three.
Jake Joyce came in with the save, working three innings. He had no runs, no hits, seven strikeouts and two walks.
Cameron Martin led the way for the Chiefs, going 3-for-3 and drawing two walks. He hit a double and had two RBI.
Mitchell Turner scored three runs, had one hit and an RBI. In addition to his work on the mound, Joyce went 2-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI.
Brenden Newman drew three walks, hit a triple and had two runs scored.
Carlisle (2-0 overall, 1-0 in the VIC) will host Martinsville at 5 p.m. today.
Boys Soccer
Bassett 5
Chatham 0
Bassett High School’s boys soccer team shut out Chatham 5-0 Tuesday night.
Bengal Tyler Martin had two goals while teammates Jaime Turner, Bryan Byrd and Jake Sharpe each scored a goal.
Keeper Bill Ison had one save.
Bassett next will play Northside at 7 p.m. Friday at home.
Girls Soccer

McMichael 1
The Lady Bengals took down McMichael in North Carolina Tuesday night, 3-1.
Scoring for Bassett were Julia Teague, who also had one assist; Tayler Magee; and Sasha Doss. Mara Doss also had an assist.
Working the goal was Lynn Murphy with 11 saves for the night.
The Bengals (2-1-2) play Tuesday against Tunstall.

Patrick County 8
Carroll County 1
The Patrick County High School boys tennis team defeated Carroll County 8-1 in varsity tennis action Tuesday afternoon at Stuart.
Derrick Agee, Lucas Terry, Jordan Easter, Tyler Scales, Drew Cockram and Trevor Wilkinson shut out Carroll County in singles matches.
In doubles play, Agee/Terry and Cockram/Cole won their sets. Jarrod Arnder and Kevin Reynolds lost the third doubles match.
The Cougars return to the court at 4:30 p.m. Friday to play Bassett.

Bassett’s girls tennis team narrowly defeated Martinsville on Tuesday night, 5-4.
Winning singles sets for the Lady Bengals were Caitlyn Cart, Jessica Ashworth and Martha Pilson.
In doubles play, Cart and Sarah Hanson won their set, and Martha Pilson and Kasey Gray defeated their opponents.
Bassett (3-1) will play again Thursday at home against G. W. Danville.

Patrick County High School’s softball team beat Carroll County 13-2 Monday.
The Lady Cougars were led by Ingrid Joyce, who went 3-for-4; Susan Plaster, who went 2-for-4 and had three RBI; Whitney Bowers, 2-for-4 and three RBI; and Kylene Culler, who went 2-for-4 and had two RBI.
Kaitlyn Culler was the winning pitcher, playing in six innings, striking out six and giving up two hits.
Patrick County (5-0) next will play G.W. Danville on Wednesday.
Girls Tennis
In Carlisle’s girls team’s Monday match against Martinsville, Esther Kang defeated Peyton Joyce, 8-4. Her name was left off a list of Carlisle winners in Tuesday’s Bulletin.
