The Spencer Penn Centre, in partnership with the United Way of Henry County & Martinsville, held a dedication ceremony Saturday for the Mary Jordan Family Fun Zone addition to the centre’s library.
Jordan, president of Spencer-Penn Centre, taught at Spencer-Penn Elementary School before it closed in 2004.
The Family Fun Zone, which adjoins the library, was Jordan’s former kindergarten classroom and was named after her to honor her years of dedication to young children.
The addition, made possible with funding from The Harvest Foundation, expands the library with an area for families with younger children and focuses on learning through play beginning at birth.
Sheryl Agee, director of children’s initiatives for the United Way, thanked Harvest for its continued support of efforts to better prepare children for success in school and life. “What we invest in children during these important years not only aids in their future success but has a direct impact on the economic development of our community. It’s a win-win for everyone,” she added.
Agee also recognized the Blue Ridge Regional Library for its support and help in developing the Spencer-Penn addition, which was modeled after the Family Place Library in Martinsville.
Tommy Slaughter of the Henry County Board of Supervisors presented Spencer-Penn with a resolution from Henry County commending the effort of Spencer-Penn, the United Way and The Harvest Foundation for recognizing the lifelong benefits the Family Fun Zone would bring to the community. |
