By BULLETIN AND AP REPORTS -
Martinsville’s unemployment rate rose in May to 21.9 percent, once again the highest rate in Virginia, statistics show.
The city’s rate rose about 2 percent from April. The new figure was released Tuesday by the Virginia Employment Commission.
Henry County's unemployment rate was the second-highest in the state at 15.2 percent. It rose about 1 percent from its April rate.
Twenty-four jurisdictions reported double-digit unemployment in May, and Virginia’s 10 metropolitan areas all saw higher unemployment rates. The highest metropolitan area was Danville with 13 percent.
The VEC reported that the state’s seasonally unadjusted rate rose 0.4 of a percentage point in May to 7 percent last month. Labor analysts said the rise in unemployment came as college graduates and students started looking for jobs. Layoffs at car parts suppliers in Virginia also contributed.
Virginia’s seasonally adjusted May rate of 7.1 percent is well below the U.S. average of 9.4 percent, the VEC said.
