Forty indicted in city

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

Two Martinsville residents were indicted Monday on charges of attempted murder in connection with a February incident. They were among 40 people indicted.

Leine Victoria Gravely, 22, of 114 Douglas Road, Martinsville, was indicted on one count attempted first-degree murder.

Lyric Shentel Martin, 25, of 41 Elijah Court, Martinsville, was indicted on one count attempted murder.

Both also were indicted on one count each conspiracy, discharge a firearm within city limits, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and shoot at an occupied dwelling.

According to court records, Joshua Lee Hylton was the victim of the Feb. 20 incident.

A third person, Herman Lee Lipford Jr., 33, of 1973 Water Oak Road, Callands, is set for trial in October on an attempted murder charge and the same additional charges in connection with the incident, court records show. According to previous reports, the incident began around 6:30 p.m. Feb. 20, when officers responded to a report of shots fired at an apartment in the 800 block of Forest Street.

Upon arrival, police found what appeared to have been multiple rounds of shotgun fire damaging the outside of an apartment.

A female was wounded in connection with the incident, police said at the time. She was taken to the Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, where she was treated and released, according to previous reports.

Hylton was not injured, Martinsville Investigator D.P. Shumate said Monday.

An indictment is not an indication of guilt. It is a grand jury’s determination that enough evidence exists to warrant a trial.
