Twice as nice: Two wins at home

The Martinsville Mustangs won both sides of a doubleheader against Gastonia on Thursday, the first 17-10 and the second 5-4.
Matthew Scruggs won the second game on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to put Martinsville ahead.
The Mustangs (12-10 second half, 19-31 overall) and Grizzlies (7-15, 21-29) were tied going into the seventh. Martinsville had taken the lead early with two runs, but a rally put the Grizzlies ahead 4-2 in the third. The ‘Stangs then scored a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to make it a tie ball game.
Phil Cerreto set two Mustangs’ records early in the second game. He now holds the record for most home runs in a single season with seven and the most hits in a single season with 65.
Game One was the completion of Tuesday’s game at Gastonia, which was rained out with the ‘Stangs leading 5-4 in the fourth.
Scruggs hit a grand slam to highlight a seven-run inning for the Mustangs, sealing the win for Martinsville. The teams were tied 10-10 in the eighth.
Lance Harting took the win after pitching 22⁄3 innings. He struck out one and gave up two hits.
The Mustangs had a strong game offensively. Cerreto went 5-for-6 with four RBI and four runs scored. Brad Augstin was 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. John Malloy was 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored. Scruggs went 2-for-5 with five RBI and a run scored.
David Laufer took the loss for the Grizzlies after working 2⁄3 an inning. He gave up five hits and seven runs.
Mustang head coach Barry Powell was ejected in the first game’s ninth inning after arguing a play at home with umpire Patrick Sampsell.
Few games remain for the ‘Stangs. They will play tonight at Wilmington and Saturday at Fayetteville. Their final regular season game is at Hooker Field on Tuesday against Forest City, the leader of the CPL.
