Three people were charged Thursday after what police described as a methamphetamine lab was found at a motel in Stuart, according to Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith.
Greta Bowman McAdams, 40, of 154 Hephill Drive, Bassett; Kevin Wayne Woods, 35, of 200 High Point Church Road, Stuart; and Jason Leonard Staples, 28, of Cherry Creek Road, Meadows of Dan, all were charged Thursday with manufacturing methamphetamine in the presence of children 7 and 9 years old and possess precursors to manufacture methamphetamine, Smith said.
All three are being held without bond, Smith said.
“The children were not at the scene when we arrived,” Smith said. “They are now with a family member, and they are safe. Thankfully the children were unharmed.”
He did not say if the children were related to any of the suspects.
However, Smith said there is ample evidence “the children were in the lab during the time the lab was in operation.”
Police received information that a methamphetamine lab was being operated in a room at the Virginian Motel around 5:50 p.m. Wednesday, Smith said. The motel is located up the street from the sheriff’s office.
Deputies found an active lab in Room 109, the sheriff said. Officers secured the scene and detained two people.
A third person was arrested Thursday.
“The lab had been operating 18 to 20 hours before our arrival,” Smith said.
Due to the dangerous and potentially toxic nature of chemicals associated with manufacturing methamphetamine, a hazardous materials recovery team was needed to remove and dispose of items found in the motel room as required by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regulations, Smith said.
According to the DEA’s Web site, methamphetamine ranks behind only alcohol and marijuana as the drug used most often in many Western and Midwestern states. The drug, which stimulates the central nervous system, is highly addictive.
Investigation into the incident continues, and anyone with information is urged to contact the sheriff’s office at 694-3161. |
