Bull riding has been added to the Patrick County Agricultural Fair this year.

Don Jones, with East of Mesquite Rodeo Inc., said 21 open (experienced) riders as well as amateurs are scheduled for the bull riding event for today at the amphitheater at Rotary Field in Stuart, starting at 8 p.m.

“We are excited to add the rodeo to the fair,” said Sonny Swails, chairman of the fair for the Stuart Rotary Club. “We couldn’t have done it without sponsor Boyce-Holland Veterinary Services”.

It will be an unusual roundup of open riders. About two-thirds have ridden in Professional Bull Riders (PBR) events, including David Long, Chase Chandler, Josh Faircloth and Carlos Garcia, who just won Jerome Davis PBR both nights.

“Grow our own cowboys” is a saying that is true with bull rider Micheal Lane, who has been riding for 15 years and he is only 19 years old. He started riding mutton busting at the age of four and bucked his way to winning the Virginia High School Rodeo belt buckle for many years. He finished 14th in the National High School Bull Riding and earned other achievements and awards, including riding in the PBR.

The rodeo is open to amateur bull riders, $30; calf/steer riding, $20; and for the young ones mutton bustin’ for $10 entry fee. Every rider must sign a release prior to riding. Anyone under the age of 18 requires a parent or legal guardian to be present and to sign the release for the rider. For more information call (336) 697-0079 or Tina Dugger, coordinator of the rodeo, at 694-2844.

The Patrick County Agricultural Fair opened Tuesday. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., and rides start at 6 p.m. It continues daily through 10 p.m. Saturday.

Nightly ride specials are $20 wrist band for unlimited rides, from 6 to 10 p.m. On Thursday, there will be a student discount of $2 with a coupon for ride wrist bands and free fair admission. Thursday also is senior night, with people ages 60 and over admitted free.

Other fair features are Thursday, sprint cars; Friday, demolition derby; and Saturday, tractor pull.
