A land grant document apparently signed by Thomas Jefferson in 1781 when he was a royal governor brought $2,100 at an auction of hundreds items yesterday in Critz.
Roger Beasley of Elk Creek Road, Stuart, bought the document, said Steve Dunkley, who coordinated the auction. Dunkley said he did not know Beasley’s plans for the document.
Dunkley said the land grant apparently signed by Jefferson was to William Poor for about 364 acres in what is now Patrick County.
Jefferson was governor from 1779 to 1781, and he became the third U.S. president in 1801.
Dunkley said Ken Farmer of “On the Road” recently gave the document a “wide appraisal,” saying it could bring $1,500 to $3,500 or more depending on the number of bidders at the auction. Three or four people bid on it, Dunkley said.
More details about the auction will be in Monday’s Martinsville Bulletin. |
