BURNT CHIMNEY — A crane operator from the Henry community was killed Monday after his machine fell off a barge into Smith Mountain Lake.
Capt. Patrick Meeks of the Franklin County Department of Public Safety said divers recovered the body of 54-year-old Roger Dale Goad of Henry in about 60 feet of water Monday afternoon.
Meeks said Goad was working for a company that was replacing a dock in the Blackwater section of the lake. According to a Franklin News-Post report, Goad worked for Plyler Homes and Docks, which is based in Moneta.
The accident happened about 11:30 a.m., Meeks said, and Goad’s body was recovered about two hours later.
Meeks said crews will try to retrieve the crane today. It weighs nine to 10 tons, he said.
According to the News-Post, the accident happened at 420 River Creek Road in the Gills Creek area. |
