A Dry Fork man died Friday after his motorcycle and a pickup collided on Virginia 57 near the intersection of Rolling Hills Drive, according to the Virginia State Police.

Philip Gordon Thompson, 50, of Dry Fork, died at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville following the 11:26 a.m. Friday accident, according to Trooper J.L. Lovell.

Tony Pritchett Jr., 22, of Axton, was charged with reckless driving in the incident, Lovell said.

The accident occurred when a Ford 150XLT pickup, driven by Pritchett, pulled out of the Food Lion parking lot, crossed the westbound lanes of Virginia 57 and started across the eastbound lanes of the highway, Lovell said.

The 1998 Kawasaki VN1500 motorcycle, driven by Thompson, had been stopped at the Virginia 57/U.S. 58 traffic light and pulled onto Virginia 57 headed east when the collision occurred, the trooper said.

The motorcycle ran into the passenger side door of the pickup, Lovell said.

State Police Sgt. M. Phillippi witnessed the accident, Lovell said. It was estimated that the pickup was traveling 15 miles per hour and the motorcycle was traveling about 30 mph before the impact, Lovell added.

Thompson was taken by Stone Ambulance to Memorial Hospital, where he died, Lovell said.

Pritchett was not hurt but a passenger in the back seat of the pickup was taken to the hospital, Lovell said.

The Dyers Store Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene, Lovell said, adding that he remained there for about 80 minutes.
