For 29 years, Oktoberfest has drawn thousands of people into uptown Martinsville with its celebration of arts, crafts, music and food.
Saturday’s event, the 30th annual Oktoberfest, will continue that tradition.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature live music performed in three locations: the Bridge Street stage, the Broad Street stage and the Main Street stage.
There also will also be carnival rides for children, the third annual car show, more than 30 craft vendors, food, a beer garden and more.
Car show entries will be accepted until Saturday morning. The show will be held in the Broad Street parking lot, and cars also will be shown on Church and Main streets.
Ron Poteat, of Ronnie’s Classic Auto Body Restoration, said the cars will date from the early 1900s to 1975. There also will be some new and special interest cars, he said.
The cars will be judged in more than 49 classes starting at 11 a.m., Poteat said. Awards will be handed out at 3 p.m., and the Best in Show winner will be awarded a special trophy. There also will be a chassis dynamometer, he said, for measuring horsepower.
For more information on the car show or to register, call Poteat at 632-7983.
Food vendors will be stationed on Broad Street, offering food such as funnel cakes from the Chestnut Knob Ruritans and Chick-fil-A sandwiches.
On the Bridge Street stage, the usual location of TGIF, students from Teresa’s School of Dance will perform at 10 a.m. Theater Stars will perform at 11 a.m., followed by EC Hundley & Friends at 12:15 p.m., Black Rayne at 1:30, Three Piece Suit at 2:45 and Southern Comfort at 4.
Many booths also will be along Bridge Street, including the Martinsville Exchange Club, the Martinsville Republican Party and the American Cancer Society. Martinsville Urgent Care will be there providing flu shots.
Meanwhile, Reach N Out will perform at 10 a.m. on the Grand Piano stage on Main Street, followed by Teen FX at 11, Final Hour at 11:45, Cross Point band and drama team at 1:15 p.m. and Coylers Green at 2:30.
On Main Street, many crafts vendors will be present, such as the Southern Virginia Artisan Center and Angela Cobler’s handcrafted fabric baskets and potholders. Henry County Master Gardeners will be on Main Street selling plants.
Most vendors and organizations will be along Church Street. Organizations such as the Bassett Historical Center, Good News Jail Ministry and the Uptown Historical Museum will be present. Also, Studio 107 will have a booth; knits, homespun and dyed yarns will be sold by The Whole Knit and Kaboodle; the Carver Ruritan Club will have baked goods and crafts; and Leather and Steel will provide handmade leather goods.
Overall, said one of the organizers, Jeanne Lawson, there will be 35 to 50 craft vendors. Some are local, she said, and many will be coming from out of town. Their crafts will be on display throughout the day.
There is a 40 percent chance of rain on Saturday. The rain date for Oktoberfest is the following Saturday, Oct. 24.
Sponsors of 2009 Oktoberfest are Hooker Furniture Outlet, Bassett Furniture Outlet, Mel’s Market Square, Martinsville Uptown Merchants, Lawrence Distributing, Classic Auto Body Restoration, Draper and Ferrell Clothiers, and the Martinsville-Henry County Christmas Parade Association. |
