Editorial: Area voters have a say
Sunday, November 1, 2009
On Tuesday, Virginians will vote for state and local leaders and, in some cases, local referendums.
With their votes, residents will have a chance to set the state’s path for the next four years when issues such as transportation, education and energy will be at the forefront. The elections of a governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and all the members of the House of Delegates give voters input on those issues with their ballots.
In Henry County, voters in Blackberry, Collinsville and Iriswood districts will pick supervisors and school board members, none of whom are opposed. In Martinsville, constitutional offices are up for election, including the contested race for commissioner of the revenue.
In Patrick County, Smith River and Dan River district voters will pick supervisors and school board members, and voters throughout the county will consider a meals tax referendum. Stuart voters also will decide whether town restaurants can serve mixed alcoholic beverages.
All those races give voters a say on local issues, from government operations and taxes to schools. They are important contests, even when candidates are not opposed.
The point is that area voters have stakes in all these races and should turn out to vote on Tuesday. It is a privilege to vote, and we hope all those registered take advantage of the opportunity to have their say at the ballot box.
