Area split on state races

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

By BY MICKEY POWELL - Bulletin Staff Writer

Virginians’ choice for a new governor in Tuesday’s election was the choice for voters in Henry County, but not those in Martinsville, unofficial election results show.

Local voters helped elect a new governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general, as well as helped to fill three Virginia House of Delegates seats. The delegates’ seats are for two years; the others are four-year terms.

Bob McDonnell, a former state attorney general who is a Republican, was elected governor over state Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Charlottesville, unofficial results from the Virginia State Board of Elections show.

In Henry County, McDonnell got 8,159 votes while Deeds got 4,791. But in the city, Deeds got 1,678 votes while McDonnell got 1,565, results show.

The same trend occurred locally in two other statewide races.

Republican Incumbent Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling defeated Democratic challenger Jody Wagner, who was the state’s finance secretary from 2006-08 under Gov. Tim Kaine and previously state treasurer from 2002-06 under then-governor Mark Warner, state results show.

Bolling received 7,831 votes in the county while Wagner received 4,817. Yet in the city, Wagner received 1,626 votes while Bolling received 1,518, according to the unofficial local results.

In the attorney general’s race, state Sen. Ken Cuccinelli, R-Fairfax, defeated Del. Steve Shannon, D-Vienna, state results show.

County voters preferred Cuccinelli over Shannon by 7,870 votes to 4,644 votes, respectively. Martinsville voters preferred Shannon over Cuccinelli by 1,592 votes to 1,543 votes, respectively.

Tenth District Del. Ward Armstrong, D-Collinsville and the current House minority leader, was elected to a 10th term. He defeated Ed Creed of Claudville, a Republican and first-time candidate, state results show.

Districtwide, Armstrong received 9,083 votes while Creed received 6,939 votes, according to state election results. (See story, Page 9-A.)

Fourteenth District Del. Danny Marshall, R-Danville, was elected to a fifth term. He defeated Democrat and former Danville mayor Seward Anderson Jr. by 10,312 votes to 5,754 votes, respectively, state results show.

Del. Don Merricks, R-Pittsylvania County, ran unopposed in the 16th District and was elected to a second term, state results indicate.

In Martinsville, incumbent Commissioner of the Revenue Ruth Easley was elected to a third term. She defeated challenger John T. Carter, who runs some H & R Block franchises and made his first bid for public office.

Easley received 2,228 votes while Carter received 867 votes, city election results showed. (See story, Page 9-A.)

Other city constitutional officers ran unopposed and were re-elected. They were Sheriff Steve Draper, Treasurer Cindy Dickerson and Commonwealth’s Attorney Joan Ziglar.

County voters filled seats on both the Henry County Board of Supervisors and the Henry County School Board — mostly with incumbents. Each of the seats was unopposed.

The board of supervisors is gaining two new members, however, according to unofficial election results from the Henry County Registrar’s Office.

Joe Bryant was elected Collinsville District supervisor. He will replace Jim McMillian, a one-term supervisor who decided not to run again.

Former school board member Milton Kendall was elected Iriswood District supervisor. He will replace longtime supervisor Paula Burnette, who did not seek re-election.

Incumbent Blackberry District Supervisor Jim Adams was re-elected.

Re-elected to district school board seats were Kathy Rogers of Collinsville, Curtis Millner Sr. of Iriswood and Rudy Law of Blackberry.

Local election results will be declared official after the Henry County and Martinsville electoral board canvass those results today.

Voter turnout in Henry County was 36.6 percent. Turnout in the city was not available.
