A Franklin County woman who works in Suite 104 at the Medical Office Building in Martinsville said that between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, her billfold was taken from her purse at the office. She said it is green and is tri-fold. She said she doesn’t expect to get the cash back but the billfold contained her drivers license, social security card and a credit card that will be a lot of trouble to replace, plus she is concerned about being a victim of identity theft. If anyone finds the billfold discarded, she can be reached at 638-8983 to arrange to get it back.

Patrick Hawks, who works on the Fieldale Festival of Lights, was busy Thursday morning clearing away the leaves from around the Fieldale Community Center, where he has already started decorating. He said that he plans to cut the lights on Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving. He is asking for volunteers to help put up the displays, string electric cords, etc. There is a sheet at the community center with the hours that Hawks plans on working, weather permitting, where you can sign up to assist him.

According to one odd but true story, “a mother had her forehead tattooed with the Web address of a gambling site after auctioning off advertising space on her head to pay for her son’s school fees.

“Karolyne Smith has to live with a permanent billboard on her forehead after she accepted Goldenpalace.com’s offer of $10,000 for the ‘advertising space.’ She needed the money to send her son Brady to a private school.

“Karolyne said: ‘I really want to do this. To everyone else, it seems like a stupid thing to do. To me, $10,000 is like a million dollars.’

“‘I only live once, and I’m doing it for my son. It’s a small sacrifice to build a better future for my son.’

“Karolyne did not take the decision lightly. She discussed it for more than three weeks with her boyfriend Jeremy Williams.

“Smith’s eBay auction attracted more than 27,000 hits and 1,000 watchers. Bidding reached $999.99 before Goldenpalace.com, an Internet gambling company met Smith’s $10,000 asking price. Goldenpalace.com also gave her another $5,000 for her trouble.”

From The Old Farmer’s Almanac comes this tip on having a spa day at home and saving money. Here are two facials recommended “that smooth wrinkles”:

• Whip the white of an egg until it’s stiff and rub it over your face and neck. Allow it to dry. Then rinse away with warm water.

• Mix cornstarch and evaporated milk together to make a thick paste. Apply it to your face and allow it to dry. Then rinse away with cold water.

To make a donation to Christmas Cheer, send it to P.O. Box 540, Martinsville, Va. 24114, or drop it off at the office at 211 Doyle St., Martinsville.
