On health care, abortion

Friday, November 6, 2009

The article about the local pastors who gathered recently to express their opposition to health care reform reminded me of the old expression: “Throwing the baby out with the bath water.” One of their main reasons for opposition was that of abortion coverage provided by tax dollars. While I respect their feelings on this issue, I began to wonder as I read whether their personal health care plans might just possibly cover abortion for policy holders since most private providers do so.

I’m not making any accusations since I don’t know the answer myself. I think it might be informative for each of them, indeed for each person who is opposed to abortion, to investigate whether the policies that cover them and their families include abortion coverage. If so, in order to avoid even unwitting complicity in abortion, they should perhaps seek coverage from another insurance company even if it required a higher monthly payment. To do otherwise would seem hypocritical.

I appreciate concern that tax funds might be used to pay for abortion, a procedure which is anathema to many; however, there is no difference in the final outcome of said procedure whether it be funded by tax dollars, by an employer, or by an individual. It seems to me that perhaps the pastors and others opposed to health care reform for the reason mentioned previously are concerned with the lives of the unborn to the exclusion of those who are already living here among us.

In a perfect world, there would be no war, there would be no one without health care, there would be no abortion. We don’t live in a perfect world. We live in an imperfect world with all that entails. Most of us would rather that our tax dollars, federal, state or local, not be used to fund certain programs, policies, etc. It is a shame that there are so many abortions, but I doubt that abortions will ever be prohibited completely in the U.S. They would certainly be continued even if they were banned.

Irving “Magic” Johnson was diagnosed as HIV positive in 1991. At one time, a diagnosis of HIV/AIDS would have been a death sentence; however, the fact that he’s still alive 18 years later indicates that with enough money, one can receive excellent medical care and afford the latest and best medicine under our present health care system. How many really believe that had Johnson been poor, with no health care insurance, he would still be alive today? For those of you who believe that, I have for sale a magic elixir that will allow you to live forever. Only $500 a bottle.
