H1N1 vaccine clinic set Monday
At National Guard Armory

Friday, November 6, 2009

The Virginia Department of Health will hold an H1N1 vaccine clinic at the National Guard Armory in Martinsville on Monday.

The clinic will operate in three shifts — from 9 a.m. to noon, 1 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Each time slot will have vaccine available, according to a health department news release.

This clinic will focus on vaccinating those who are at highest risk for transmitting H1N1 flu, suffering complications if they become ill and those who provide emergency and health care to the general population. These key populations include:

• Pregnant women

• Caregivers for children under 6 months of age

• Children 6 months to 24 years of age, particularly pre-schoolers and the home-schooled

• Health care and emergency services workers (police, fire and rescue)

There is no charge for the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccination. The National Guard Armory is on Commonwealth Boulevard.

People also are advised by the health department to protect their health against flu and other infectious diseases by:

• Getting their H1N1 vaccination now if they are at higher risk or, if they are not at higher risk, getting it as soon as vaccine supplies become more widely available.

• Staying home from work or school when ill, and for at least 24 hours after a fever resolves, while limiting their contact with others to keep from infecting them

• If possible, calling their health care providers before seeking care for flu-like illness so that the infection control measures can be put in place

• Covering their nose and mouth with a tissue when they cough or sneeze and throwing the tissue in the trash after use

• Washing their hands often with soap and water, especially after they cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners also are effective.

• Limiting close contact with sick people

• Preventing the spread of germs by not touching their eyes, nose or mouth
