Friday night football roundup
Magna Vista wins Piedmont District title

Friday, November 6, 2009

Magna Vista clinched the Piedmont District title on Friday, downing Bassett 22-14 at Bassett to complete a journey from worst to first.

The Warriors (6-4 overall, 4-0 PD) entered the season with a 21-game losing streak, but wound up undefeated in the district in coach Joe Favero’s second season at the helm of the Ridgeway program.

Harvey Taylor led MVHS with 258 yards of total offense. The sophomore quarterback completed 12 of 19 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown, and he carried the ball 23 times for 122 yards.

Bassett’s Shaq Finney led the Bengals with 85 yards and a TD on 24 carries. Desmond Woods intercepted a pass and returned it for his team’s only other score.

The Warriors have clinched a playoff berth, but their opponent could not be confirmed Friday night. MVHS will play its postseason game on the road, according to Favero.

Bassett (3-7 overall, 2-2 PD) could still slip into the playoffs, but the Bengals’ fate was also unclear late Friday.

Patrick County 29, Martinsville 7

Patrick County ended its season in the Piedmont District with a 29-7 win over Martinsville Friday night at Dan Greene Memorial Stadium.

Josh Walker produced 130 yards of offense on 24 carries and two touchdowns.

The Cougars lost the battle of total yardage, 234-281, but the Bulldogs had five turnovers, one of which directly resulted in a Cougar touchdown.

Martinsville’s only score of the game came on a 4-yard run from Akeem Morehead with 11 seconds to play.

The Cougars’ playoff hopes hinge upon a string of events, but the most important of which is a Graham loss to Carroll County during today’s matchup, according to PCHS head coach Brad Dalton.

If Graham wins it will take the final spot in the Region IV Division 3 playoff bracket. If not, the Cougars still have a shot based on bonus points, according to Brad Dalton.

Other area teams

Tunstall (3-7 overall, 0-4 PD) did not play; season completed.

Carlisle (2-6 overall) did not play; season completed.
