Suspects sought in city break-in

Friday, November 13, 2009

Martinsville Police Investigators are searching for two young men who forced their way through the door of a residence located at 810 Forest St. in Martinsville, according to a city release.

Resident Vincent Gregory said he was in a room at the rear of his home Thursday around 4:20 p.m. when he heard a loud noise at the front of the house. As Gregory approached the front door he saw two young men standing at the doorway, one of them armed with what was described as a “long gun,” the release stated. The specific type of weapon is not known.

The perpetrators saw Gregory and after a brief pause turned and ran from the residence, the release states.

Gregory said he does not know either of the two men and indicated that they did not speak during the incident, the release states. He said he followed the two men as they ran down Forest Street but lost sight of them when they went behind a residence at 710 Forest St., according to the release.

Martinsville Police investigators have recovered evidence and talked with witnesses other than the homeowner who saw the men running on Forest Street, the release states. A canine officer from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office was able to track a scent to the 1100 block of Smith Lake Road about one-quarter of a mile from where the incident took place.

The victim described the perpetrators as young, black males of slender build. The one carrying the gun was said to be wearing a white sweatshirt with unknown writing and a hood which partially disguised his face, the release states. He was said to be light-skinned and approximately 5 feet, 6 inches to 5 feet, 8 inces tall.

The other suspect was described as wearing a red sweatshirt and being of average height and a slender build; he was not observed carrying a weapon, the release states.

There were no shots fired and no injuries in the incident. The only known damage is to the door of the residence at 810 Forest St.

This case is still under investigation; anyone with information is asked to call the Martinsville/Henry County Communications Center at 638-8751 or Crime Stoppers at 63-CRIME or 632-7463. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
