FRIDAY’S WORD is anachronism (uh-NAK-ruh-niz-um). “Manual typewriters and slide rules are often regarded as anachronisms in this age of computers and calculators.” (Source: Merriam-Webster Online)

Michelle Wirt Eaton’s students at Martinsville High School are collecting pop tabs from aluminum cans as a service project for the Ronald McDonald House.

Eaton sent the release from RMH stating that collecting pop tabs is a great way to teach kids about philanthropy and the importance of recycling, and raise funds to help children and their families at the same time.

Many families travel far from home to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children. The treatment may last a day, a month or even longer, the release stated. It’s a long time to be away from home or to divide a family.

Ronald McDonald Houses collect pop tabs instead of entire aluminum cans because the tabs are pure, high-quality aluminum, unlike cans, which consist of aluminum and other alloys, the release stated. Tabs are also easier to store than whole cans.

“We are very excited about this project, and I would like to fill 30 full ‘Ronald McDonald’ boxes by Dec. 11,” said Eaton. She said her students will travel to the Roanoke Ronald McDonald house on Dec. 15 to tour the facility and turn in the tabs. Anyone who would like to participate can pick up a box in Eaton’s Room No. G110, or e-mail her at meaton@martinsville.K12.va.us.
