The Henry County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday night will consider a list of priorities to send to the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) for inclusion on the six-year improvement plan.
The priority list includes improvement projects to primary and interstate roads for fiscal years 2010-2015. If approved, the priorities will be forwarded to the CTB, which is slated to meet Dec. 1 in Richmond.
County staff suggested a list of priorities for supervisors to consider supporting, with the first five listed in order of importance: the funding and construction of the U.S. 58 improvement project between Stuart and Hillsville; a connection road from U.S. 58 to the Patriot Centre; the design, engineering, funding and construction of Interstate 73 through Henry County that follows a corridor east of Martinsville and west of the Henry-Pittsylvania County border; improvements to the Lee Ford Camp Road/Greensboro Road (U.S. 220)/Church Street intersection in Ridgeway, near Mountain View Cemetery, including signals and Martinsville’s request for Phase II of the Liberty Street improvement plan.
Also at their 6 p.m. meeting in the Henry County Administration Building, the supervisors also will consider other priorities, including realignment and improvements on U.S. 220 from the intersection with Virginia 87/220 south to the North Carolina line, including work to alleviate hazardous curves on southbound U.S. 220.
The project is essential to tie into the four-laning of U.S. 220 in North Carolina, according to board meeting documents.
Supervisors also will consider supporting the four-laning of Virginia 87 from U.S 220 to the Virginia/North Carolina line to connect with planned improvements of the road in North Carolina. The road becomes Highway 14 in North Carolina.
Also, supervisors will consider supporting an extension of Commonwealth Boulevard west to connect with the U.S. 220 bypass.
In other matters at the meeting, the supervisors will:
• Consider a resolution to honor the Bassett High School Bengals Marching Band, which won a third consecutive state championship on Oct. 31 and finished second in the United States Scholastic Band Association National Championships Nov. 7.
The band is under the direction of Trey Harris and Scott Allred, director and assistant director respectively.
• Hear a report on general highway matters from Lisa Hughes, resident engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). |
