It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas ... well, almost.

Saturday’s rain washed out the Christmas parades in Martinsville, Bassett and Stuart.

All three of the parades have been rescheduled to this Saturday, Dec. 12. The Bassett and Stuart parades will begin at 2 p.m. and the Martinsville-Henry County parade will begin at 6 p.m.

“We are not taking the risk of people coming out or not coming out. We want to give the best parade we can,” said Jeannie Lawson, one of the organizers of the Martinsville-Henry County Christmas Parade when she announced it has been postponed early Saturday morning.

Saturday’s rain was the result of a weather disturbance tracking along the East Coast. Meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Blacksburg said a pocket of low pressure developed Saturday and rapidly pushed the disturbance along the southeastern coast.

The weather maker was expected to reach the outer banks of North Carolina by Saturday afternoon and leave the mid-Atlantic states that evening.

Although this area saw only rain, snow and rain were reported in Patrick Springs. People in Roanoke awoke Saturday to a light dusting of snow, which continued throughout the morning. Even the District of Columbia saw snowflakes, canceling flights at Washington Dulles International Airport.

Cold high pressure was expected to move in behind the system overnight, paving the way for sunny skies, light north winds and a high temperature of 43 today.
