Forecast improves for parades
Wintry mix expected early Sunday in area

Friday, December 11, 2009

By BULLETIN REPORTS -

If the weather forecast holds, the Martinsville-Henry County Christmas Parade should be able to proceed as planned Saturday night.

Having been postponed from Dec. 5 due to bad weather, the parade is set to begin at 6 p.m. Saturday in uptown Martinsville.

Earlier this week, bad weather was predicted for Saturday. But on Thursday night, the National Weather Service predicted a mix of wintry precipitation — including sleet, snow and freezing rain — to begin after midnight Sunday and continue until between 9 a.m. and noon Sunday, according to the service’s Web site. A hazardous weather outlook was issued for Saturday and Sunday, although Saturday’s weather is expected to be mostly sunny.

This year’s parade is expected to feature 139 entries. Its route is shown at right.

Christmas parades also are planned Saturday afternoon in Bassett and Stuart. Both are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
