Magna Vista’s girls basketball team held on to a late lead to down Morehead 73-69 Monday night during the Warrior Classic in Ridgeway.
“We played pretty good overall,” said Lady Warriors coach Jackie Dalton. “They (MVHS) were ready to play tonight. I can’t fault them. We came out and did pretty good tonight.”
After entering the fourth quarter with a 54-47 lead, the Warriors allowed Morehead to pull within two (71-69) according to Dalton, but a late foul allowed Magna Vista the margin they needed to hold on to the win.
The Warriors (4-1 overall) were led in scoring by Jacole Hairston, who had a game-high 33 points and added nine rebounds, six steals and three assists to her totals.
“She just played a good overall game tonight,” Dalton said of Hairston.
Hairston scored 11 of the Warriors’ 16 points in the second quarter and 10 of the team’s 16 in the third on her way to 33.
Playing as a team and not quitting were the keys to the win, according to Dalton. She added that Magna Vista led for the majority of the game.
Also helping the Warriors was Lacole Moore, who had 13 points and six assists, and Brandi Warner and Shanice Hairston, who each had 10 points.
Shanice Hairston also had two blocks and eight rebounds.
While Dalton was pleased with the team’s play overall, she added that there still are a few things to work on before Piedmont District play.
“We definitely have to work on our passing. Handling the ball, passing and rebounding,” said Dalton. “Our effort is there. Our defense is there. We play excellent defense. We just have to do the little things better.”
The Warriors play next at 5 p.m. Wednesday when they face McMichael High School.
