Bassett High School’s girls basketball team routed McMichael 58-27 Monday night during the first annual Warrior Classic at Magna Vista High School.
Despite the win Lady Bengals coach Melissa Blair was not overly pleased with Bassett’s performance.
“I think it was a bit sluggish coming back form the break,” said Blair. “We finally got it going a little and turned up the defensive intensity. Hopefully we’ll play better Wednesday.”
Tied at nine after the first quarter of play the Bengals “decided to play” in the second quarter according to Blair, and outscored McMichael 18-7 to enter the break with a 27-16 lead and a wealth of momentum.
“Our substitute patterns and our bench played a big part in the win tonight,” added Blair of the keys to the game.
Nine of 10 players scored for the Bengals, according to Blair, as Bassett held McMichael to 11 points after the half six of which came on two 3 pointers in the final quarter of the game.
Bassett was led in scoring by Lauren Snead and Iesha Smith, who each had 11. Smith also tacked on seven steals and six rebounds and Snead added four steals.
The Bengals’ Sarah Salmons and Diandra Thompson each added seven points, and freshman Andrea Venable helped with six points and four steals as she recorded her first points as a varsity athlete.
With district play around the corner Blair stated that she hoped the slow start would “light a fire under them” and that they will need to play with more intensity if they are to be successful in upcoming matchups.
McMichael’s Michaela Simpson led her team in scoring with 10 points.
The Lady Bengals next play at 7 p.m. Wednesday when they face Morehead at Magna Vista. |
