A fire was discovered Thursday afternoon in Plant 7 at Stanley Furniture Co., said Henry County Fire Marshal Rodney Howell.
The fire was reported at about 4:38 p.m. at the plant, which is on T.B. Stanley Highway in Stanleytown. Light smoke was showing when firefighters arrived, but most of the fire had been extinguished by a sprinkler system, Howell said.
He was not certain of the fire’s cause Thursday night but said the blaze apparently began in Styrofoam packaging used to package beds.
“It appears to be an equipment malfunction,” Howell said, adding that the blaze was not suspicious.
Plant 7 was closed Thursday, Howell said, so no one was inside when the fire began. Stanley employee John Ingram, who works in the boiler room, discovered the smoke as he was checking doors at the plant to make sure they were locked, Howell said. Ingram called 911.
The Fieldale, Collinsville and Bassett volunteer fire departments responded, as did the Bassett Rescue Squad and Henry County Public Safety, Howell said. No injuries were reported, he added.
Howell did not have a damage estimate Thursday but said Styrofoam stored in the plant might have suffered smoke damage. Fire crews remained on scene around 6:30 p.m. doing salvage work, he said.
Howell or representatives from his office plan to return to the plant Monday morning, when they will speak with maintenance personnel to learn more about what happened.
