Sunday, January 24, 2010
By BULLETIN STAFF REPORTS -
A joint drug operation in Henry County resulted in the indictments of 17 people on 37 felony criminal charges, according to the Henry County Sheriff's Office
Fifteen of the 17 people indicted were arrested Friday, according to a release from the sheriff's office issued Saturday.
The joint operation was conducted between September 2007 and June 2009, the release states.
It involved undercover drug purchases, search warrants and vehicle stops in Ridgeway, Axton, Collinsville, Bassett and Horsepasture, according to the release.
Authorities bought or seized quantities of crack cocaine ranging from .6 of a gram to 3.5 grams with values ranging from $60 to $225, the release states.
Methadone, Oxycodone, Xanax and Hydrocodone were purchased with values ranging from $5 to $20 per pill, according to the release.
The indictments on drug charges in connection with the operation were issued by a regularly scheduled Henry County grand jury on Tuesday, according to sheriff's office Major Steve Eanes.
The indictments included 23 counts of distribution of cocaine, six counts of distribution of Schedule II controlled substance, one count of distributing controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school, two counts of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, three counts of distribution of imitation controlled substance, one count of distribution of Schedule IV controlled substance and one count of attempt to commit a drug felony, the release states. All those charges are felonies.
The indictments were sealed until the arrests were made Friday, according to Henry County Sheriff's Major Steve Eanes. They were direct indictments, meaning they did not go through general district court, he added.
An indictment is not an indication of guilt. It is a grand jury's determination that there is enough evidence to hold a trial.
