Monday, January 25, 2010
By ELIZA WINSTON - Bulletin Staff Writer
During its meeting Tuesday, the Henry County Board of Supervisors will hear a report on the audit of Henry County accounts for the fiscal year that ended June 30.
A representative from the firm that completed the audit, Creedle, Jones and Alga, will discuss the report and answer questions.
In other matters at its 3 p.m. meeting Tuesday at the Henry County Administration Building, the board will:
• Consider a resolution to honor Dr. Thomas Shields, operations medical director for the Henry County Department of Public Safety.
• Consider projects for Regional Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy. Each year, the West Piedmont Regional Economic Development District compiles an updated Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy.
County projects are prioritized into three categories: Construction or implementation projects in advanced stages of planning; projects that are still in the planning stages and not yet ready for implementation; and nonconstruction/nonimplementation projects of a special economic development purpose.
• Consider authorizing a resolution to apply for state aid to fund the Piedmont Area Regional Transit (PART) system, which started offering public bus transportation in Henry County and Martinsville on Jan. 5, 2009.
The number of riders increased in December for the sixth straight month, board documents show.
The resolution would authorize the county to apply for a grant of $93,888 from the state Department of Rail and Public Transportation. A local match of 21,112 is required. Of that, the county would pay half, or $10,556, documents show.
According to board documents, the tentative fiscal 2011 budget for the system totals $240,000. Of that amount, fares would account for $10,000, federal aid would be $115,000, state aid Life Line would be $55,000, state operating aid would be $38,888, and the total local match would be $21,112.
Henry COunty’s contribution for fiscal 2010-11 would be $10,556, documents show.
• Discuss rescue squad issues. The squads recently asked that the county provide oversight of EMS services.
Supervisors directed county staff to place the item on the January agenda for further discussion.
• Mark Heath, president and CEO of the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corp., will make his quarterly update.
• Consider a Department of Fire Programs Grant. County Director of Public Safety Dale Wagoner is asking the board to accept a grant providing $2,063 to buy a laptop computer and media projector for the public safety office. No local match is required.
• Consider a recommendation that each volunteer fire department receive $19,693.37 from the General Assembly’s Fire Programs Fund.
• Consider awarding a $19,775 contract to Missouri Great Dane of St. Louis, Mo., to buy a pet sheltering trailer.
• Consider awarding five American Recovery and Reinvestment stimulus grants totaling $101,264 to Gateway Streetscape. The funds will be used for tree plantings along Fairy Stone Park Highway, a tree planting project along Commonwealth Boulevard, pruning assistance and hazard tree removal, funding for employee retention for the next year and a tree inventory.
• Consider meeting in a closed session to discuss appointees to the Community Policy and Management Team, Industrial Development Authority and Dan River Alcohol Safety Action Program, and to consult with the county attorney on pending legal matters, the acquisition/disposal of real estate and to discuss as-yet unannounced industries. |
