Police are continuing to seek information on the whereabouts of a man wanted in connection with a Monday night shooting in Bassett.

Deion Leslie Walker, 19, of 167 Chip Circle in Collinsville, is wanted on one count each malicious wounding and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, according to Henry County Sheriff’s Lt. Ricky Walker.

The charges were filed in connection with an incident around 10:25 p.m. Monday at the Fasmart at 5975 Fairystone Park Highway in Bassett, Lt. Walker said.

Rico Thadeaus Scales, 22, of Scales Penn Avenue in Spencer, was injured in the shooting. According to Lt. Walker, Scales told police he was leaving the store after buying some drinks when he noticed a gray Chevrolet Cobalt parked at the gas pumps. Scales said he saw a black male wearing a red hoodie and a red cap walking toward the store, Lt. Walker said.

Scales told investigators he heard “three of four shots” and then felt “his legs give way,” the lieutenant said. Scales then “fell into” his own vehicle, Lt. Walker added.

“It is my understanding he (Scales) was shot in the legs,” Lt. Walker said.

The man in red allegedly “jumped into the Cobalt” and fled the scene, Lt. Walker said. He added there were three or four people in the Cobalt.

Henry County Deputy David Ayers spotted a vehicle matching the description a short distance from the FasMart and attempted to stop it, according to a sheriff’s office news release. A pursuit ensued, heading west on Fairystone Park Highway and going several miles into Patrick County until it stopped in the area of Piano Lane.

The occupants of the vehicle fled, the release stated.

Officers arrested the alleged driver at the scene, Lt. Walker said.

Jonathan Wade, 21, of 1313 Summit Road, Martinsville, was being held on $2,500 bond in the Henry County Jail on a charge of eluding police, according to Lt. Walker.

A third person later walked out of the woods and surrendered, Lt. Walker said.

Lamont Anthony Woods, 19, of 3725 Preston Road, Martinsville, was charged by the Virginia State Police with a misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana, Lt. Walker said.

A second passenger in the vehicle was not located, the release stated.

Scales was treated at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and released.

Police are asking residents to help and encouraged anyone with any information on Deion Walker’s whereabouts to call 638-8751, 63-CRIME (632-7463), 911 or local law enforcement, Lt. Walker said.

“If anyone has any information on Mr. Walker’s whereabouts, we would greatly appreciate it if they would give us a call,” he said.

Rewards of up to $1,000 are available through Crime Stoppers for information related to unsolved crimes. The amount of any reward is determined by the nature of the crime and the substance of information provided.
