 Deion Walker |
Thursday, February 25, 2010
By DEBBIE HALL - Bulletin Staff Writer
A man wanted in connection with a shooting Monday night remains at large, but police are hopeful he will surrender.
“We would like to hear his side of the story,” Henry County Sheriff’s Lt. Ricky Walker said Wednesday.
Deion Leslie Walker, 19, no known address, is wanted on one count each of malicious wounding and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, Lt. Walker said.
“We think he’s still in the area. He has a lot of local ties,” Lt. Walker said.
Police originally listed a Collinsville address for Deion Walker, but it turns out he last lived there in November 2008, the lieutenant said.
The charges against Deion Walker were filed in connection with an incident around 10:25 p.m. Monday at the Fasmart at 5975 Fairystone Park Highway, Bassett, police have said.
Rico Thadeaus Scales, 22, of Scales Penn Avenue in Spencer, was returning to his vehicle after buying drinks at the store, Lt. Walker has said.
As he returned to his vehicle, Scales told police he saw a black male wearing a gray hoodie and a red cap standing near a gray Chevrolet Cobalt at the gas pumps, Lt. Walker said.
Scales told police he then heard three or four gunshots, felt his legs give way and fell into his vehicle, the lieutenant said.
At least one bullet hit Scales, according to a release from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office. He later was treated and released from the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
The man in the hoodie allegedly got into the Chevrolet and fled, police have said.
A pursuit ensued on Virginia 57 west (Fairystone Park Highway) and ended several miles into Patrick County, near Piano Lane, Lt. Walker said.
“The Patrick County Sheriff’s Office was instrumental in searching the area where” the wanted man was last seen, Lt. Walker said. Patrick investigators “did an outstanding job trying to track him down up there.”
The search in Patrick was halted when Patrick officers “found evidence that led them to believe” the wanted man had been picked up along Virginia 57, Lt. Walker said.
He explained that tracks in the snow from the woods to an area along the road led police to conclude that the man was picked up in a vehicle.
He added that police in both jurisdictions agree that Deion Walker likely is no longer in Patrick County.
However, “he does have local ties” in Henry County, Lt. Walker said.
“We’re asking anyone with any information” on Deion Walker’s whereabouts to call police, Lt. Walker said.
He remains hopeful that Deion Walker will turn himself in to police.
There are always two sides to each story, Lt. Walker said, and “we would love to hear his side.”
Lt. Walker urges anyone with information to call the police at 638-8751, 911 or your local law enforcement agency.
“It would help residents out, help us out and help out the community if we can apprehend this suspect,” the lieutenant said.
He added that rewards of up to $1,000 are available through Crime Stoppers, which can be reached at 63-CRIME (632-7463).
Callers can remain anonymous, Walker said, and noted that the amount of any reward is determined by the nature of the crime and the substance of information provided. |
