Roundup: Patrick County tops Chatham

Patrick County’s baseball team topped Chatham on Tuesday, 7-6.

Patrick Thompson picked up the win after pitching 22⁄3 innings. Parker Heath threw four scoreless innings for the Cougars.

Jody Martin hit a home run in the third. Jacob Reynolds was 1-for-4 with two stolen bases.

Patrick County (2-0) will host Carroll County at 7 p.m. on Friday.

BOYS SOCCER

Martinsville 3, Franklin Co. 3

Martinsville High School’s soccer team tied Franklin County 3-3 during Tuesday night’s season opener at FCHS.

Despite outshooting FCHS 19-7, the Bulldogs were unable get the win as the match went into overtime.

Penalty kicks were not awarded to each team because it was a regular-season game.

Zach Corcoran led the Bulldogs with two goals. Juan Angel added one and an assist.

Garrett Van Nutt also had an assist.

Martinsville next plays at 6 p.m. Friday when it travels to the Franklin County Invitational to face Magna Vista.

SOFTBALL

Patrick Co. 5, Chatham 4

Patrick County’s softball team held on for a 5-4 win over Chatham on Tuesday night to open its season.

The Lady Cougars were up 4-2 entering the top of the seventh before giving up five hits and allowing two runs.

Tied at 4 in the eighth, PCHS’ Haley Wilson hit the game-winning single for the Cougars.

Wilson was 2-for-2 on the night with two sacrifices and two RBI.

Brittany Stovall earned the win. In eight innings of work, Stovall struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

Kayla Hammond went 2-for-3 with two doubles. Casey Bradshaw was 2-for-2.

The Cougars next play at 5 p.m. Friday when they host Carroll County.

Bassett 21. G.W. Danville 0

Bassett’s softball team shut out G.W. Danville 21-0 in five innings during Tuesday night’s season opener.

The Lady Bengals (1-0 overall) had three players with four hits, including Morgan Mays, Brooke Joyce and Devyn Varner. Casey Cassell added three hits.

Mays led the way for the Bengals with four RBI and Joyce added two.

Morgan Spangler scored four runs and Mays, Varner, Cassell and Joyce each recorded three.

Bassett next plays at 5 p.m. today when it hosts Christiansburg.

GIRLS TENNIS

Magna Vista 6, William Fleming 3

Magna Vista’s girls tennis team won its season opener 6-3 against William Fleming Tuesday in Ridgeway.

The Lady Warriors No. 1 seed Gloria Willamson won her match 6-0, 6-1, as did No. 2 seed Danielle Depeau (6-4, 7-5), No. 3 seed Anne White (6-2, 6-1) and No. 6 seed Amber Vaughn (6-0, 6-1).

MVHS’ No. 1 seed doubles duo of Williamson and White won their match 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, and No. 3 doubles Vaughn and Shannon Hairston won 6-2, 6-1.

The Warriors next play at 4:30 p.m. today when they host G.W. Danville.
