Grand jury indicts total of 53 people
Tuesday, November 16, 2010
Henry County grand jurors on Monday indicted three people in connection with the May slaying and robbery at BG's Express #2 in Chatham Heights.
Steven O'Neal Porter, 27; Montreal Rashawn Kent, 17; and Dominique Qumain Hylton, 20, each was indicted on a first-degree murder charge.
Police have said store clerk Nirmal Singh, 57, was killed execution-style after three people entered the store minutes before midnight May 28. A second clerk, 78-year-old William Thomas, was seriously injured but survived.
Porter, whose address was listed as the Henry County Jail, also was indicted on three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and one count each of possession of a firearm by a convicted violent felon, aggravated malicious wounding, robbery and armed statutory burglary.
Kent, whose address was listed as W.W. Moore Detention Center in Danville, also was indicted on three counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony and one count each of aggravated malicious wounding, robbery and armed statutory burglary.
Hylton, whose address was listed as the Martinsville City Jail, also was indicted on three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and one count each of robbery, aggravated malicious wounding, armed statutory burglary and possession of a firearm by a felon under age 29 convicted of a felony while a juvenile within the past 10 years.
Also indicted Monday was Corey Jermaine Hairston, 31, of the Henry County Jail. Hairston was indicted on charges of first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a felony within 10 years.
The charges were in connection with an Aug. 28 slaying.
According to police, Hairston was charged in connection with the shooting death of Kenneth Wayne Booth, 51, of Eden, N.C. Passersby found Booth on Aug. 28 in the yard of a mobile home at 143 Meeks Road, Ridgeway.
An indictment is not an indication of guilt. It is a grand jury's determination that enough evidence exists to warrant a trial.
Four men were indicted Monday on charges of conducting an illegal gambling operation.
Henry County Sheriff's Office Lt. Ricky Walker said the charges were filed in connection with the Feb. 9, 2009, searches of several alleged Internet gambling operations in the county.
According to reports from the time, county authorities seized 66 computers, associated equipment and nearly $3,000 at four locations.
Police said then that patrons at the businesses could swipe a card for any dollar amount. That amount was converted into "tokens," which allegedly were used as wagers to place bets on a number of games, according to police accounts. Winnings allegedly were redeemed in cash, police said.
Internet sweepstakes businesses were banned in Virginia until July of this year.
