A three-vehicle accident Sunday evening on Virginia 57 in Bassett left one person dead and another injured.
Virginia State Police Trooper R.D. Patton said he could not release the name of the deceased driver late Sunday pending positive identification.
The wreck happened at about 5:40 p.m. Sunday on Virginia 57 near Easter's Auto Sales and the 57 Grocery, Patton said. The deceased person was driving a 1994 Ford Ranger west on 57, about one-tenth of a mile east of Stone Drive, when the Ranger crossed the center line and collided with a 1991 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Raymond Carver Lawson Jr., 61, of Stuart, Patton said.
A third vehicle, a 2009 Toyota Camry driven by Mark R. Steele of Lawsonville, N.C., was traveling behind the Chevrolet and also became involved in the accident, Patton said.
Lawson, who was pinned inside his vehicle, was flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment, Patton said. Information about his condition was not available late Sunday.
Steele's injuries were minor, the trooper said.
Both the Chevrolet and the Ford were totaled, he added.
Traffic on 57 was diverted onto Friendship Drive for about two hours while rescue officials and Patton worked the scene.
The Bassett Rescue Squad and the Bassett Volunteer Fire Department responded, Patton said.
