Candidates among top fund-raisers

Democratic and Republican candidates in the 9th House of Delegates District and the 20th Senatorial District races were among the top fund-raisers in Virginia in the Nov. 8 election.

Between the five candidates in the two races, total receipts reported through Dec. 1 totaled about $4.7 million.

In the 9th House District race, the Ward Armstrong for Delegate committee raised $1,188,942 through Dec. 1, the most of any of the House candidate committees, and the Charles Poindexter for Delegate committee raised the second most, $941,808. That's according to information on the website of the Virginia Public Access Project, a nonpartisan, nonprofit group that keeps track of money in politics and other matters.

In all, Armstrong committees had total receipts of $1,202,727, and Poindexter committees had total receipts of $1,312,865. Besides Ward Armstrong for Delegate, A Strong Majority is an Armstrong political action committee. Besides Charles Poindexter for Delegate, Southside Victory Fund is a Poindexter political action committee.

Poindexter, R-Glade Hill, defeated Armstrong, D-Bassett, in the election.

The top contributors for Armstrong were: Virginia Democratic Party (Richmond), $156,068; A Strong Majority PAC (Richmond), $47,000; Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (Washington, D.C.), $25,000; Robert Randolph Hatten (Gloucester), $25,000; Ronald D. Abramson (Washington, D.C.), State Firefighters (Richmond) and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (Washington, D.C.), $20,000 each.

The top donors for Poindexter were: Republican Party of Virginia (Richmond), $596,893; Southside Victory Fund (Henrico), $122,799; Opportunity Virginia PAC (Richmond), $50,000; Republican Party - Virginia House Campaign Committee (Henrico), $25,696; William Howell for Delegate (Fredericksburg), $25,000; and Chris Jones for Delegate (Suffolk), $21,250.

In the 20th Senatorial District, the Bill Stanley for Senate Committee had total receipts of $1,261,848 through Dec. 1; the Roscoe Reynolds for Senate committee, $900,229; and Jeff Evans for Senate, $27,295.

The Bill Stanley for Senate committee raised the most of any of the senatorial candidate committees between Jan. 1 and Oct. 26, and the Roscoe Reynolds for Senate committee raised the 10th most. The Stanley committee raised $1,151,091, and the Reynolds committee raised $744,100. From Oct. 27 through Dec. 1, Roscoe Reynolds for Senate raised $156,129, the eighth most of any senatorial candidate committee, and Bill Stanley for Senate raised $110,757, the 13th most.

The Jeff Evans for Senate committee (independent) raised $27,295 from Jan. 1 to Oct. 26, and none from Oct. 27 to Dec. 1.

Stanley, R-Glade Hill, defeated Reynolds, D-Ridgeway, and Evans, a Fieldale independent, in the election.

The top donors for Stanley in 2011 through Dec. 1 were: Republican Party of Virginia (Richmond), $695,143; Middle Resolution PAC (Mechanicsville), $108,003; Stephen Newman for Senate (Forest), $100,000; Opportunity Virginia PAC (Richmond), $93,409; and the Virginia Republican Senate Caucus (Williamsburg), $67,458.

The top donors for Reynolds were: Democratic Party - Virginia Senate Caucus (Richmond), $576,863; Virginia Democratic Party (Richmond), $53,570; State Firefighters (Richmond), $12,000; Service Employees International Union Committee on Political Education (Washington, D.C.), $10,000; and Virginia Dental Association (Henrico), $7,500.

The top donors for Evans in 2010 and 2011 were: Aaron J. Evans (Danville), $12,500; Properties TR Properties Inc. (Martinsville), $2,750; Chris F. Mohr (Martinsville), $1,000; Wesley Wells (Bassett), $1,000; and Roy D. Stone (Bassett), $950.

Opportunity Virginia is a PAC that raises money on behalf of Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell, the website states.

Opportunity Virginia PAC made $3,654,163 in campaign contributions in 2010 and 2011. The Republican Party of Virginia was the top recipient with $2,763,505, and Bill Stanley for Senate was second with $93,409. The next tier of five recipients was in the $50,000 to $50,409 range. Southside Victory Fund (Poindexter is associated with that committee) received $50,000.

The Republican Party of Virginia made $7,584,233 in campaign contributions in 2010 and 2011. Bill Stanley for Senate was the top recipient with $740,560, and Charles Poindexter for Delegate was fourth, with $596,893.

The Virginia Republican Senate Caucus made campaign contributions totaling $2,516,613 in 2010 and 2011. The Republican Party of Virginia was the top recipient with $1,353,900. Bill Stanley for Senate was sixth with $67,458.

The Republican Party - Virginia House Campaign Committee made campaign contributions totaling $214,169 in 2010 and 2011. The Republican Party of Virginia received the most with $150,000. Charles Poindexter for Delegate received the second most, $25,696.

Middle Resolution PAC made $354,642 in campaign contributions in 2010 and 2011. Bill Stanley for Senate received the most, $108,003.

The Virginia Democratic Party made campaign contributions totaling $4,442,166 in 2010 and 2011. Ward Armstrong for Delegate was the ninth highest recipient with $156,068, and Roscoe Reynolds for Senate was 18th highest with $79,220.

The Virginia Democratic Senate Caucus made $6,444,104 in campaign contributions in 2010 and 2011. The Virginia Democratic Party was the top recipient with $3,280,484, and Roscoe Reynolds for Senate was No. 2 with $576,863.

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC), "an arm of the national Democratic Party, focuses on providing funding and strategic services to Democratic leaders and candidates at the state legislative level," the VPAP website states.

The DLCC made $530,240 in campaign contributions in 2010 and 2011. The Democratic Party - Virginia Senate Caucus was the top recipient with $480,000. Ward Armstrong for Delegate was No. 2 with $25,000.
