• More than 100 firefighters who helped battle a wildfire in Patrick County last week. About 125 acres burned between Tuesday afternoon and early Wednesday. Firefighters kept the blaze from reaching any structures, but some residents and facilities were evacuated. The firefighters worked day and night to bring the blaze under control, and they have earned our thanks for ensuring the damage was not worse.
• Martinsville, Dan River Basin Association, Harvest Foundation and The Lester Group for their roles in creating Henry County’s newest multi-use trail, Rock Ridge Trail, at the Beaver Creek Reservoir. Such trails offer people more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, whether they are hiking, biking or running, which improves their health and the quality of life here.
• Citizens Against Family Violence for its “kNOw More Block Party for Sexual Assault Awareness” event Saturday in uptown Martinsville. The event was held to raise awareness of the problem of sexual assault and to support its victims. This is a worthwhile effort to combat crime and help crime victims.
