Bassett’s girls soccer team beat Magna Vista 1-0 Thursday.

BHS’ Alije Mehmeti scored the only goal of the game for the Bengals. She found the back of the net about 20 minutes into the second half on a header from a corner kick. It was assisted by Nicole Shelton.

Goalkeeper Alvalous Barbour had six saves for the Bengals.

Halifax Co.2, Martinsville 1

Martinsville’s girls soccer team lost to Halifax County 2-1 Thursday on the road.

Erin Philips scored the goal for the Lady Bulldogs, and goalkeeper Kelsey Conner had 14 saves.

In the first half, Halifax County got ahead 2-0. Martinsville (2-3-1) fought back in the second half, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

MHS next will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home against Bassett.


Martinsville 2, Halifax Co. 0

Martinsville’s boys soccer team shut out Halifax County 2-0 Thursday.

MHS’ Chase Nichols scored his first varsity goal in the 22nd minute unassisted. Juan Angel scored the second goal in the 79th minute.

Martinsville goalkeepers Sean Scaffidi and Brian Anderson each had one save.

The Bulldogs had 18 shots on goal while Halifax County had two.

Halifax County’s Miles Calybern had 16 saves.

The Bulldogs (6-1, 1-0 PD) next will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bassett.


Bassett 14, Magna Vista 4

Bassett High School’s softball team downed Magna Vista 14-4 in five innings Thursday in Ridgeway.

All nine starters had at least one hit for Bassett, and eight players scored at least one run.

Michelle Martin had two hits for the Bengals, and Abby Williams had two hits and four RBIs. Bridgette Burnette had two hits and two RBIs, and Miya Hairston had two hits.

The winning pitcher was Taylor Mabry, who pitched five innings, struck out five and allowed only five hits.

For Magna Vista, Bethany McPeek had a base hit, and Hannah Scaletta had a base hit and scored a run. Hailey Williams also had a base hit, but had a double and an RBI.

The Bengals (8-1) next will play at noon Saturday, when they will face McMichael High School at home.

Patrick County 5, North Stokes (N.C.) 4

Patrick County High School’s softball team hosted North Stokes (N.C.) on Thursday and won 5-4.

Ebony Reynolds led the Lady Cougars at the plate going 2-3 with a three-run home run and four RBIs. Logan Martin went 2-4 and scored two runs.

Natalie Mitchell threw a complete game in the circle. She struck out two, walked two and allowed eight hits.

Patrick County (9-4, 2-0 PD) next will play at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Tunstall at home.


Nine local students win Wendy’s High School Heisman Award

Nine local students have been named school winners of the 2011 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, and a Bassett High School student has been named a state finalist, according to a news release.

Julia Teague of Bassett High School was one of eight state finalists from this region, the release said. The others were from schools in Roanoke, Blacksburg and Altavista.

To be eligible for the award, students must display academic aptitude, athletic talent and community leadership. The program includes six stages of awards: applicants, school winners (one male and one female from each school), state finalists, state winners, national finalists and national winners, the release said.

In addition to Teague, school winners from this area are Bill Ison of Bassett High School; Morgan Hill and William Kendrick of Carlisle School; Emilia Isa of Magna Vista High School; Tabitha Grant and Joel Johnston of Martinsville High School; and Morgan Williams and Nolan Hendrix of Tunstall High School, the release said.

Local school winners, their families and school representatives were invited to a Wendy’s High School Heisman recognition event Saturday at the Virginia Tech spring game at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg. The Heisman trophy will be on display, and Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer will speak to the school winners.

Martinsville’s boys tennis team defeated Patrick County 7-2 Thursday.

The Bulldogs (4-4) will play a Piedmont District game at 4:30 p.m. April 27 against Bassett at home.

The Martinsville High School girls tennis team traveled to Patrick County to face the Lady Cougars in an exhibition match on Thursday and won 7-2.

The matches were an 8-game pro set for both singles and doubles.

Patrick County girls, Tunstall boys win at meet

Patrick County High School’s girls track team won a meet Thursday at home while Tunstall won on the boys side.

Team results for the girls were: Patrick County, 97; Magna Vista, 84; Tunstall, 71; Bassett, 59; and Martinsville, 2.

Results for the boys were: Tunstall, 98; Magna Vista, 86; Martinsville, 70; Patrick County, 44; and Bassett, 18.


Bassett 4, Magna Vista 0

The Bassett boys junior varsity soccer team beat Magna Vista 4-0 Thursday at Bassett.

Scoring for Bassett were Jesse Estudillo (two goals), Jose Sanches and Tyler Stokes.

Rodrigo Garcia had three assists, and keeper Cody Rose made three saves in goal.

The Bengals (5-0-1) will play Martinsville at home on Tuesday.


Laurel Park Middle beats Reidsville

Laurel Park Middle School’s volleyball team won three out of 5 matches Thursday to beat Reidsville Middle School.

The Lancers won the first, third and fifth matches, 25-14, 25-16 and 15-9, respectively. Reidsville won the second match 25-23 and fourth match 26-24.

The leading servers for Laurel Park were Vanessa Manriquez with 15 service points and seven aces, and Jessica Wade with 10 service points and two aces. Markeisha Gravely had nine service points and three kills.

The Lancers (7-3) next will play at 4 p.m. Monday against Martinsville Middle School at home.


Laurel Park Middle wins

Laurel Park Middle School’s boys and girls track teams beat Rockingham County Middle School on Thursday at Rockingham County High School.

The boys team for the Lancers won 54-37 while the girls team won 58-33.

Laurel Park next will run at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Reidsville Middle School.
