Funds to be saved, not cut
Thursday, May 24, 2012
Virginia Sen. Bill Stanley said, “Tim Kaine’s discussion with Martinsville seniors should include why he called Obamacare a ‘great achievement’ when it cuts $500 billion from Medicare,” saying our seniors deserve “honest answers, not scare tactics.”
This hoary chestnut of the “Obamacare” objectors, that it cuts $500 billion from Medicare, is nothing but a scare tactic itself. The number comes from estimates of savings from reduced costs over 10 years into the future. Stanley should be ashamed to repeat it. It almost proves the old saying that if you repeat a lie often enough, people will believe it. Anyone who wants to learn what this is about can google Factchecker, Medicare, and this subject comes right up. Also check it on Factcheck.org. A non-partisan, neutral service, Factchecker gave this statement two Pinnochios, for lack of truthfulness, adding the statement: “It’s rather rich for Republicans to complain about $500 billion in supposed cuts to Medicare that they themselves would retain, even under the cover of helping Medicare.”
Gov. Kaine stated his clear opposition to reducing Medicare coverage at the meeting Tuesday, in convincing terms in keeping with his lifelong commitment to public service.
Gov. Kaine is not only believable in person, but his record speaks for itself — during a difficult time financially, he was able to guide our state to budgetary, development and educational success. He has earned our trust; we now need him as our senator.
