Editorial: Honor veterans this Memorial Day
Sunday, May 27, 2012
Memorial Day weekend often is called the unofficial start of summer. It is a time for pools to open, hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill and a long weekend off for most workers.
More importantly, it is a time to recognize the men and women who have served in the military and those who continue to defend this country. With the nation still at war, it is appropriate to take some time to remember those who have served and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
There are several opportunities to do that this weekend. Today, Roselawn Burial Park will hold its annual Memorial Day program at 2 p.m. with Lt. Col. William Tracey Carter speaking. At 7 p.m. that day, retired Brig. Gen. Robert O. Petty will speak at the Horsepasture Christian Church. And at 7 p.m. Monday, retired Army Chaplain Carl “Lee” Hagwood Sr. will speak at the annual service at Carver Memorial Gardens.
Whether you make it to one of those or any of the other services to be held throughout the area or you thank a veteran on your own, the goal is the same — to honor our military, to foster pride in our country and to reinforce the ideals that make America unique.
