Editorial: PAA awards highlight best in arts community
Sunday, June 10, 2012
Piedmont Arts Association presents its Clyde Hooker Awards to the best of the best in the local arts community. Thursday’s recipients upheld that tradition.
The awards were presented to Hooker Furniture Corp. and Carolyn Beale for their significant contributions to the arts and culture locally. Hooker Furniture has been a long-standing supporter of Piedmont Arts, its mission and its programs, and Beale has been a longtime volunteer with Studio 107 and other arts and heritage efforts in the area.
The award is named for the late Clyde Hooker, who led the furniture company for decades and also supported the arts and other civic and charitable groups in the area. As Hooker Furniture Chairman and CEO Paul B. Toms Jr. said at Thursday’s award presentation, Clyde Hooker believed people should be “involved and active in the community. ... (He) viewed corporate citizenship as a core value of the company.”
Those beliefs are part of Clyde Hooker’s legacy, and both the company bearing his family’s name and Beale reflect that. We congratulate them on their awards and their roles in making this community a better place.
