Relief from the heat likely next week
Friday, July 6, 2012
The end of the heat wave may be in sight.
According to the National Weather Service office in Blacksburg, the temperature will climb to 87 on Monday and only 84 on Tuesday.
That is an improvement over the highs in the mid to upper 90s to around 100 that this area has experienced recently.
But don’t turn off the air conditioning just yet. Today, the high is forecast to be 99, with a heat index value of up to 103.
Saturday will be even worse, with temperatures forecast to climb to 101, with a heat index value of 105.
Sunday’s high is expected to be around 96.
There is a slight chance of rain here Sunday through Tuesday, and lows will be in the mid- to low 70s through Sunday before they fall into the 60s on Monday and Tuesday.
The heat index value — a common term in forecasts lately — is how the National Weather Service defines a heat wave. According to its website, the NWS developed the heat index to represent how temperature readings actually feel.
The heat index represents the interaction of heat and humidity. The index also is known as the apparent temperature.
The National Weather Service defines a heat wave as two days with a heat index value from 105 to 110.
